Government and Politics

As the 2024 presidential election season is set to begin in earnest on Monday, January 15th with the Iowa Caucuses, know that God is still in control and on His throne. Remember that Scripture teaches us in Psalm 135, the Lord does whatever He pleases in heaven, on earth, and in the seas. And the Psalm reminds us, God may remove nations, but He vindicates His people showing them compassion. In Daniel 2:21, we are told that God “changes times and seasons; He removes kings and sets up kings.”

God is the producer of this great drama, and we are His actors. How will you act during this political season?

1 Samuel 12:14 says, “if both you and the king who reigns over you will follow the Lord your God, it will be well.” Will you choose leaders that promote and support Biblical Christian principles or ones that pretend?

In 1 Timothy 2:1–4 we are commanded to pray for all people and our leaders. All includes both our political enemies and friends. Jesus commanded us to “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44). Will you pray for the candidate from the opposing political party as much as you pray for your favorite candidate?

We are commanded to obey and submit to government authority unless it contradicts God’s commands (Acts 5:27–29; Romans 13:1–7). Will you submit to the authority of your elected leaders, regardless of whether you like the outcome of the election? Will you still pray for the leaders you don’t like?

We are commanded in 1 Corinthians 16:14 to “let all that you do be done in love.” Will you love your neighbor who displays the “wrong” candidate’s yard sign? Will you avoid arguing endlessly with your co-workers about politics? Will you abstain from complaining about the Candidates as if you really don’t believe God is still in control

The imagery of Revelation 5:13 is comforting in turbulent times. The verse says, “And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, ‘To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!’”

O, there is one King that will always remain in power, He doesn’t have to win another election, He can’t lose the next election, He is on the throne forever and ever. Praise King Jesus!
